Hex Divided – Hex Divided I
A debut album is always a moment where a band has to prove itself. For Hex Divided, that moment arrives with “Hex Divided I”, a record set for release in early July, on which progressive rock and alternative influences come together with heavy guitars. The group does not choose a safe introduction but instead presents an album that constantly seeks tension between melody and complexity. In doing so, the band immediately shows that it prefers to follow its own path rather than existing formulas.
From the opening minutes, it becomes clear that Hex Divided places a strong emphasis on dynamics. The guitar work shifts smoothly between sharp riffs and more atmospheric passages, while the rhythm section keeps the compositions in constant motion. The vocals act as the anchor point. They sound convincing without becoming overly dramatic and manage to carry both powerful and more restrained moments credibly.
The songs often build slowly, giving the listener time to explore the different layers in the music. Where many modern progressive rock bands tend to focus on technical display, Hex Divided more often chooses atmosphere. This ensures that the longer compositions never become tiring. Melody remains more important than virtuosity at all times.
Still, the album does contain moments where ambition slightly overtakes the band. Some transitions feel a little abrupt and not every musical turn carries the same impact. At times it seems the group wants to include so many ideas in a single track that cohesion is briefly lost. These are, however, details that come with a first full release and they hardly affect the overall impression.
The strongest tracks are those in which the band finds a balance between accessibility and experimentation. In those moments, catchy choruses meet layered arrangements that reveal new details after repeated listening. It is precisely this combination that makes “Hex Divided I” interesting for fans of both alternative rock and progressive music.
The production supports this character very well. Instruments are given enough space without sounding clinical, and the mix retains a warm and organic feel. As a result, the energy of the band remains intact while subtler details stay audible. The album therefore feels like a live band captured carefully in the studio without losing spontaneity.
As a debut statement “Hex Divided I” succeeds convincingly. The band shows courage, writes strong melodies and demonstrates that technical ability only becomes meaningful when it serves the song. Not everything is fully developed yet but that is exactly what gives this debut a fresh quality. Hex Divided takes a first step that makes one curious about what comes next. (8/10) (Independent)
