Pete Philly & Perquisite is a hip-hop duo that rose to prominence in the early 2000s with their unique blend of hip-hop, jazz, soul, and classical music. The duo consists of rapper Pete Philly (Pedro Philip Monzón) and producer/cellist Perquisite (Pieter Perquin). What sets them apart is their musical sophistication and lyrical depth. Their songs address themes like identity, emotions, and social issues, while their productions are rich in live instrumentation and influences from various styles.

The two musicians met in 2002 and started making music together almost immediately. Their collaboration resulted in a refreshing, genre-defying sound that quickly garnered both national and international attention. In 2005, they released their debut album, titled “Mindstate”. The album was praised by critics and audiences alike, earning Pete Philly & Perquisite spots at major festivals such as Lowlands and North Sea Jazz. They also found success internationally, touring across Europe, Japan, and the United States. Their follow-up album, “Mystery Repeats”, came out in 2007 and further solidified their reputation as innovators in the hip-hop scene. Singles like “Mellow”, “Time Flies”, and “Mystery Repeats” became hits in the alternative circuit.

After a break of more than ten years, Pete Philly & Perquisite announced their return in 2023. They released new music, including the single “Hot Sauce”, proving they are still relevant and innovative. With renewed energy and their signature sound, they are now reaching a new generation of listeners. The album “EON” features personal tracks and brought the duo back to the stage.

To mark their reunion, Maxazine asked the musicians to define their musical footprint through 15 essential tracks—songs that capture their essence.
