Unforgettable 5th Day at Sziget: Sam Smith’s Electrifying Performance Steals the Show

The fifth day of Sziget 2024 was one to remember, thanks to Sam Smith’s unforgettable performance. The British artist, known for their extravagant shows, did not disappoint in Budapest. From the outfits to the choreography, everything was perfectly executed.

As the days grew hotter in Budapest, the Óbuda Island festival grounds were no exception. With temperatures soaring well above 30 degrees Celsius, one might think taking things slow would be a good time. However, the festival continued in full swing, although many festival-goers sought refuge at the festival beach, cooling off with their feet in the Danube River. It’s hard to imagine a better way to relax in such heat.

The best remedy for the heat was simple: avoid going out during the hottest part of the day and wait until later when the temperatures became more bearable. The sun sets earlier in Budapest than in the Netherlands, making the evenings more comfortable. Becky Hill was the first international artist to take the Main Stage, and it was the perfect moment to start the day.

The British singer is best known for her collaborations with some of the world’s biggest DJ acts, including “Lose Control” with MEDUZA and “Crazy What Love Can Do” and “Remember” with David Guetta. It’s always a question of how such songs will translate to a stage without those famous DJs, but Becky Hill delivered a stunning solo performance. She not only sang beautifully but also gave the well-known hits a fresh twist with her band.

If you grew up in the 2000s, you’re likely familiar with “The Racing Rats” and “Papillon” by Editors. The band still plays these songs in 2024, and they were met with enthusiasm on the Revolut Stage. The band struggled, though, largely due to the heat. “Are you still with us in this fucking hot tent?” singer Tom Smith shouted midway through the set. The dancing and singing audience didn’t make it any easier, but as a band, that’s exactly what you want to see.

Fontaines DC followed with a show on the Revolut Stage, but as Rolling Stone noted after the performance, they could have easily played the Main Stage. The Irish punk band performed to a slightly smaller crowd than Sam Smith, but their energy was just as intense and deeply appreciated. It didn’t matter whether they played well-known songs like “I Love You” and “Jackie Down The Line” or less streamed tracks; it was a wild and lively party.

The highlight of the day, however, was Sam Smith’s show. Once known for their soulful ballads, Smith has transformed. The non-binary artist has evolved into an expressive performer who lets their emotions flow freely at Sziget, speaking to their devoted fans through tears. Smith began with hits like “Stay With Me” and “I’m Not The Only One,” gradually building up to more dramatic performances of “Lose You” and “Promises” while donning an extravagant black gown.

This was also the moment when the stage atmosphere shifted significantly. Dancers in latex performed daring routines, some even kissing on stage, while Smith appeared in a netmask. None of this was surprising for the die-hard fans, but for the average Sziget attendee, it was likely a revelation of how much Smith’s performances have evolved over the years. No longer just sweet and gentle, their shows are now bold and provocative. In a country where LGBT rights are a contentious issue, Smith’s performance made a strong statement.
