Arde Bogotá – Manufacturas del Club de la Gente Sola
Arde Bogotá emerged in 2017 in Cartagena, in the Spanish region of Murcia, and has grown in recent years into one of the most important names in Spanish-language rock. After the golden debut album “La Noche” and the double platinum-certified “Cowboys de la A3”, which entered the charts directly at number one in 2023, expectations are sky-high for “Manufacturas del Club de la Gente Sola”, the third studio album by Antonio García, Dani Sánchez, Pepe Esteban and José Ángel Mercader. Joe Chiccarelli, known for his work with Morrissey, produced the album, which was recorded at the legendary EastWest Studios in Los Angeles.
Where “Cowboys de la A3” definitively lifted the band beyond the label of emerging talent, this record seeks a more cinematic and mature sound, without losing the epic intensity that characterises Arde Bogotá. This is immediately apparent in “Instrucciones”, the first single, which with its recognisable chorus and rock-driven momentum remains close to the band’s familiar sound. “Bigger Splash” ventures further, with an atmosphere reminiscent of Love of Lesbian, and shows a band consciously broadening its palette.
The heart of the album, however, lies with “El Club de la Gente Sola”, the song from which the title is taken. According to the band, this was the most difficult song to finish, with the most transformations during the production process. The result is a fascinating mixture of funk, dub and post-punk, with influences reminiscent of Golpes Bajos and Wire, but also of the rhythmic pulse of Talking Heads. Beneath the danceable surface lies a dark story about loneliness in the nightclub, where bodies cross paths without ever truly connecting with each other.
Other songs such as “Tesoro”, “Judas” and “Antifiesta” move closer to the recognisable, compelling rock sound with which the band became successful, while “Olivos” and “Señor Herrero” leave room for more restrained, narrative moments. “Hervidero” and “Asidero” build up the tension again towards the end, and closing track “Sacude” lets the record fade out with the energy that can be expected from a live band such as this.
What makes “Manufacturas del Club de la Gente Sola” special is the ambition to look beyond the formula that has made the band successful so far. Not every experiment lands equally convincingly, and the more bombastic press statements surrounding the album sometimes promise more than the music itself delivers. Nevertheless, Arde Bogotá repeatedly manages to find the balance between these new explorations and the epic, compelling core that made them one of the biggest names in Spanish rock.
With this record, the band from Cartagena proves that growth does not have to mean giving up your own identity. “Manufacturas del Club de la Gente Sola” is an elegant, thoughtful step forward, opening the way to a new chapter without losing the soul of the band. (7/10) (Sony Music)
