The Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler has died. Her family announced this today via the singer’s website. The singer died in a hospital in Portugal after she had recently fallen into an artificial coma following intestinal surgery. She did wake up from this, but she nevertheless died last night.

Bonnie Tyler had been active since 1975. She achieved her international breakthrough with her second single ‘Lost in France’. But ‘It’s A Heartache’ became an even bigger hit in 1977. Because she had just had nodules removed from her vocal cords shortly before the recording, the result was that she developed her characteristic husky voice. In 1982, her biggest hit followed: ‘Total Eclipse Of The Heart’, which was written and produced by Jim Steinman, who had gained fame as the producer of the album “Bat Out Of Hell” by Meat Loaf. He applied the same bombastic production to this song.

Her success declined after the 1980s. Although she still scored a hit in our country in 1995 with ‘Making Love (Out of Nothing At All)’. With a remake of ‘Total Eclipse Of The Heart’, she and the French singer Kareen Antonn still achieved a number 1 hit in Belgium, France and Poland under the title ‘Si Demain (Turn Around)’. In 2013, Bonnie Tyler also took part in the Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö, Sweden, where she represented her home country, the United Kingdom. She finished in 19th place with 23 points with the song ‘Believe In Me’.

Bonnie Tyler was 75 years old.
