Wunderhorse live in Hamburg

In their British homeland, Wunderhorse are already regarded as one of the most exciting live bands of their generation – Monday evening at Hamburg’s Fabrik made it impressively clear why. After just a few minutes, it was obvious: we will be hearing much more from this band in the future.

Not too long ago, Wunderhorse were still playing at the smaller Molotow or as support for Fontaines D.C in Hamburg. Even then, it was evident that this band brings a special stage presence and that their path would lead steeply upward. Today they stand like hardly any other band for an intense live experience – present, energetic and with exceptional depth.

The evening at Fabrik was opened by Junodream, a London band who describe themselves as space-rock and address the alienation of the 21st century in their songs. In autumn, they return to Germany for two more shows – a date one should make note of.

At exactly 9 PM, Jacob Slater (vocals/guitar), Harry Fowler (guitar), Jamie Staples (drums) and the new bassist Seb Byford, who has only been part of the band since May, took the stage – and started directly as usual with energy with their hit from the self-titled album “Midas”. A song that immediately set the direction for the evening: loud, emotional, captivating.

The setlist was a good mix of songs from their celebrated debut album “Cub” and the current follow-up “Midas”. Particularly songs like “Rain”, “Leader of the Pack” or “Teal” showed the band in top form: precisely played, and carried by Slater’s powerful voice. The song “The Rope”, which was released brand new that very day, could not be missing from the evening either.

Wunderhorse manage to captivate their listeners with music that stirs up, carries away and resonates. The evening at Fabrik was impressive proof of this, and the diverse audience reflected how cross-generational this fascination already is in Germany as well.
