Legendary Blondie Drummer Clem Burke Dead

American rock drummer Clem Burke died. Burke was primarily known as the official drummer for the new wave band Blondie, with whom he achieved international fame between 1975 and 1982 and then during their reunion.

Born Clement Anthony Bozewski on November 24, 1954, in Bayonne, New Jersey, Burke began his musical career in local cover bands. In 1975, he became a member of Blondie, playing a crucial role in the band’s musical evolution. He participated in all of Blondie’s albums, including the influential albums “Parallel Lines” (1978) and “Eat to the Beat” (1979).

After the band’s first period ended in 1982, Burke became a highly sought-after session drummer. He collaborated with many famous artists, including Eurythmics, Ramones, Bob Dylan, Iggy Pop, and Joan Jett.

Burke considered himself a ‘rock & roll survivor.’ Inspired by drummers like Keith Moon and Ringo Starr, he developed a dynamic and pronounced drumming style. ‘There was no jealousy regarding Debbie’s position,’ he once stated in an interview. ‘I simply wanted to become famous too.’

After Blondie’s first period, Burke remained active on the music scene. The group resumed their collaboration in 1999 and released five additional albums. Burke continued to collaborate with various groups and artists, further strengthening his reputation as a versatile drummer.

Blondie described Burke in a statement as ‘the heartbeat of the band.’ They emphasized his unmatched musical talent, energy, and passion. ‘His contributions to our sound and success are immeasurable,’ the band stated.

Burke leaves behind a considerable musical legacy, extending far beyond the boundaries of the new wave movement. He will be remembered as an influential drummer who helped shape the history of rock. Clem Burk died at the age of 70.
