Me First and The Gimme Gimmes, the renowned punk rock cover supergroup, brought their high-energy show to Portland, Oregon this week. The sold-out crowd at the legendary McMenamin’s Crystal Palace was treated to an unforgettable night of punk-infused covers spanning multiple decades and genres.

Formed in 1995, Me First and The Gimme Gimmes have carved out a unique niche in the music world as the first – and likely only – punk rock supergroup dedicated to covering traditional hits with a punk rock aesthetic. Their ability to transform well-known songs into punk anthems has earned them a dedicated following over the years.

Setting the Stage

The night started with performances by support acts Still Animals and The Schizophonics, warming up the crowd for the main event. As anticipation built, Spike Slauson took the stage armed with an electric ukulele, opening with a cover of Don Gibson’s 1958 classic “Oh Lonesome Me” before inviting the rest of the band to join him.

Once the full band assembled, they launched into a high-octane version of “Jolene,” seamlessly transitioning into Paula Abdul’s “Straight Up.” A relentless barrage of hits followed, showcasing the band’s ability to blend punk energy with beloved classics.

The setlist was a testament to the band’s versatility, featuring songs from artists as diverse as Dolly Parton, Paul Simon, Barry Manilow, Carly Simon, The Beatles, and The Beach Boys. Each cover was infused with the band’s signature punk rock flair, creating a unique and entertaining experience.

More Than Just Music

Me First and The Gimme Gimmes is not just about the music – it’s about the performance. Spike Slauson shared the spotlight with his fellow musicians, including fan-favorite CJ Ramone. The band’s ability to balance great music with engaging stage presence kept the crowd entertained throughout the night.

The audience’s enthusiasm was palpable, with non-stop smiles and sing-alongs throughout the set. As Spike humorously pointed out, the band is available for weddings, bar and bat mitzvahs, quinceañeras, corporate events, and confirmations – or even house parties for those with deep pockets!

Me First and The Gimme Gimmes delivered a party atmosphere that left the Portland crowd wanting more. Their unique blend of punk rock energy and beloved classics creates an irresistible live experience. For music fans looking for a night of nostalgia with a punk twist, Me First and The Gimme Gimmes is a must-see act.
