Naturally 7 Enchanted Netherlands With Their Vocal Magic

The human voice is capable of extraordinary things. Yet, few groups offer a cappella intensity like Naturally 7 does. Officially, they started in 1999 as a choir with a contemporary style. On stage however, the group unfolded into a full-blown band, without using any physical instruments. Visitors at the Castellum Theatre in Alphen aan den Rijn developed a collective smile as they witnessed how truly unique Naturally 7 is.

Voices as Instruments

The vocal group coined their musical style ‘Vocal Play’, which was characterized by imitating instruments using the human voice, down to the finest detail. A trombone, harmonica, or full drum kit – effectively, Naturally 7 is a full band. And during their new theatre show, they deployed that versatility with exceptional effectiveness.

Unexpected

It was so effective that many audience members initially doubted the authenticity of what they heard. Ages young and old watched the seven musical chameleons perform, as some even gasped in surprise. “This can’t be real, can it?”, exclaimed one visitor. To answer that question, the group performed ‘Wall of Sound’ – a technical masterpiece where each instrument is expertly highlighted. The harmonica of second tenor Sean and the bass guitar of N’namdi immediately earned approval from the crowd. Slowly, the silent doubt in the hall faded, making way for deafening applause.

Harmonious

The impressive vocal imitations stunned people, but never became a gimmick. During ‘Going Home’ and ‘Same Train’, the group sang outstanding a cappella songs. Their pleasant harmonies soared throughout the entire hall, some even unamplified. Every member of Naturally 7 showed up vocally strong and versatile. Even the drummer Warren, the rhythmic heart of the group, exchanged his vocal drum kit for a crystal-clear singing voice. The warm group of men effectively combined forces and was met with great appreciation from the audience because of it.

Dual Role

The band members effortlessly switched between their roles as singer and instrument. This versatility resulted in beautiful collaborations, especially highlighting baritone Dwight’s trombone and tenor Ricky’s electric guitar impressions. Third tenor Rod stole the show: alongside guitar and trumpet, he even imitated a scratching DJ deck. Entertaining, and equally musically impressive.

Underrated

Yet, Naturally 7 was neither new nor unknown. They had previously appeared at Night of the Proms, toured with giants like Michael Bublé, and reached the finals on the American TV show ‘The World’s Best’. The international jury, including our own Angela Groothuizen and Chantal Janzen, gave them a standing ovation on a weekly basis. Knowing this, it was remarkable that the band was performing in the Netherlands for a full week during their ‘Closer Look’ world tour.

Beautiful Covers

So what songs did they perform? Hits like ‘While My Guitar Gently Weeps’ by The Beatles, the infectious ‘Crazy’ by Cee-Lo Green and the impressive ‘Sound of Silence’ by Simon & Garfunkel, among others. That latter song carried a beautiful story, which frontman Roger passionately explained between songs. Their rise to prominence warrants that closer look, if only because of their pure passion for vocal range.

Say You Love Me

The band’s moral roots were firmly planted within church music, which silently reflected in the track selection. Most notably, their original songs ‘Jericho’ and ‘Say You Love Me’ even rose above the excellent covers. The group’s powerhouse delivery spread goosebumps throughout the venue, with the crowd reacting in full admiration.

Never Give Up The Fight

Besides fragile emotion and joy, Naturally 7 also displayed a strong sense of urgency. With their energetic interpretations of ‘Get Up, Stand Up’ by Bob Marley and Pink Floyd’s ‘Another Brick In The Wall’, the group added social commentary to their performance. The social concern was clearly palpable between band members, who remained affectionate and inviting, while firmly planted in their belief that love makes life better.

Fix You

That unifying love was the guiding principle throughout the entire concert. Frontman Roger made a plea to connect with each other, for actually professing your love, and even made visitors who were going through difficulties feel seen. In honor of those difficult times, the band delivered a rock-solid encore with Coldplay’s ‘Fix You’. With a standing ovation and tears on many faces throughout the crowd, the hall gladly returned that loving energy.

Connecting With Fans

After the stellar performance, the band members immediately flew into the foyer, connecting with fans who were eager to praise their efforts. In a time where global artists are increasingly forced to withdraw for their own safety, Naturally 7 came out proudly as they shook hands and shared personal stories. Their mission to bring the Netherlands closer together in times of distress succeeded – and it might have been more necessary than most people would comfortably admit.
