Video premiere: Kameel feat. Tim Vanhamel – Tales From A Sinister Farm

One of our favourite Belgian trios, Kameel, has taken another fine step towards their forthcoming third album “VarioMatic” with their new single “Tales From A Sinister Farm”. This time, guitarist Patrick Steenaerts, bassist Hans Mullens and drummer Geert Roelofs are joined by none other than Tim Vanhamel, the versatile musician we know from bands such as Millionaire, Evil Superstars, Deus and his guest contribution to the first album by Eagles of Death Metal.

“Tales From A Sinister Farm” feels like a nightmare unfolding in the countryside. The track begins relatively innocently but gradually transforms into a claustrophobic sonic experience. Steenaerts’ fuzz guitars scrape like rusting metal, whilst Mullens’ bass sets a menacingly growling undertone. Roelofs’ drumwork batters your brain with mechanical precision.

Vanhamel, who has proven himself as one of Belgium’s most interesting voices in the alternative rock scene, brings a sinister urgency here that perfectly fits the dark atmosphere. His vocal lines dance between seductive and threatening, giving the track an almost cinematic quality.

Where Kameel began as an instrumental trio combining jazz, rock, krautrock and experimental music, they now seem to be consciously heading in a new direction. Their previous albums “Barkas” (2020) and “Trugschluss” (2023) already showed a band unafraid to push boundaries, but “VarioMatic” promises to be their most electronic and accessible work to date.

The three musical masterminds explore the twilight zones between jazz, punk, electronics and krautrock in a bumbling, magisterial and virtuosic manner. “VarioMatic”, the album to be released on Pang Pang Records this autumn, marks an interesting turn for the band. Where their earlier work was often cerebral and abstract, tracks like “Tales From A Sinister Farm” and the title track seem to flirt more with traditional song structures, albeit in their own unique way.

With “Tales From A Sinister Farm”, Kameel proves that evolution doesn’t have to mean losing your identity. They remain the band known for uncompromising music, but now add layers that make their work more broadly accessible without losing the edge.

It’s clear that “VarioMatic” will be a crucial moment in Kameel’s development. If “Tales From A Sinister Farm” is representative of the direction they’re taking, then we can expect an album that both honours their experimental roots and explores new territory. Tomorrow, “Tales From A Sinister Farm” officially comes out as a video clip, but it can already be seen on Maxazine!:
