Bryyo – Presence
|Austin duo Bryyo has created something extraordinary with “Presence” – a sonic odyssey that transports listeners to otherworldly realms where futuristic cityscapes blend seamlessly with natural landscapes. Carl Bisenius and Hannah Edmiston-Bisenius have crafted an album that feels like stepping into a science fiction film where the only ruling principles are progress, balance, and peace.
The journey begins with “Intro,” landing listeners on the most dreamy beach imaginable. Feet in warm sand, hands shielding eyes from a golden sun reflecting off crystalline waters – this is pure escapism. There are no worries here, only soothing rhythms and nostalgic atmospheres painting horizons full of freedom and possibility. Everything feels right with the world. Then “Banshee” crashes into this serene ocean like a harmless asteroid, bringing massive percussion, polished synths, and galloping melodies that are simultaneously futuristic and vintage. This track sets the tone for what promises to be a rich experience full of light and exploration, perfectly matching the otherworldly imagery of the album’s cover art.
The title track “Presence” overflows with optimism while maintaining a steady beat beneath graceful keys. When listeners settle into its laid-back groove, Bryyo delivers the most unexpected rock-driven twist. Near the end, “Presence” erupts like a volcano in a climactic moment that feels transcendent before settling back into calm. “Strike” offers a well-deserved respite with its subterranean bass, minimal percussion, and lo-fi qualities, creating a safe space for daydreaming. “Drift” follows seamlessly, extending this meditative experience with exotic touches that deepen the otherworldly atmosphere.
The second half begins with the mystical “Elysian,” instantly alluring with a kind of darkness that feels warm and welcoming. Its soft power and slow-burning energy create one of the album’s most memorable moments, offering a one-way trip to paradise for those who surrender to its spell. “Barbarian,” featuring Ryan Lombard, emerges as a full-fledged rock gem, spicy and energised. The track evokes images of intergalactic adventures where music becomes the weapon against inner demons. Following this, “Fabric” – the naughty sibling of “Banshee” – sends listeners speeding through futuristic landscapes on motorcycles in a TRON-like universe, complete with geometric patterns, data streams, and neon lights. Bryyo successfully cuts through reality’s invisible fabric, creating portals for escape.
“Channel” serves as a hypnotic transition, restful and gentle, pouring into the sassy “Nightcrawler.” This track belongs in the speakers of some futuristic nightclub, pulsing with energy that could easily soundtrack the next sci-fi blockbuster. The mesmerising “Distance” and “Siphon” function like white canvases, leaving space for listeners to pour their meaning into the sonic landscapes. “Trailing” enters proudly with uplifting, brilliant melodies like a wild horse running across the ocean’s surface – a transcendent, surreal image. The track pulses with strong energy and liveliness that perfectly match the duo’s name. “Ellipsis” delivers another powerful anthem for science fiction cinema before the album’s farewell. “Horizons” brings the journey full circle. Hands covering eyes once more, a beguiling chrome figure rises from the waters, chanting healing spells that gently return listeners to reality. Eyes open, the real world returns.
“Presence” proves that Bryyo has mastered the art of musical escapism. They’ve created an intergalactic adventure where sleek architecture coexists harmoniously with rough, natural landscapes. From the hyper-dynamic energy of “Banshee” and “Fabric” to the meditative qualities of “Intro” and “Elysian,” this album offers a futuristic rollercoaster through unexplored planets. For anyone seeking to escape the mundane, Bryyo provides the perfect soundtrack for interstellar travel. (7/10) (Bisenius Interactive)
