Bobby Bognar’s Handsome – …And Then Some
|With “…And Then Some,” Bobby Bognar’s Handsome presents a debut album that perfectly balances pop-punk, power pop, and raw rock ‘n’ roll. Bobby Bognar (formerly of The Piper Downs and The Bognar Brothers) demonstrates why he’s a master at writing catchy pop-rock songs. Together with lead guitarist Ian Robbins (Get Out!), bassist Norman Kelsey (Bat Country), drummer Jason Rarick (The Piper Downs), and backing vocalist Jeddrah De La Luna, he has created an album that feels familiar, with sharp melodies and an energy that’s recognizable from beginning to end.
From the first notes of “Brave,” the band sets the tone with an irresistible combination of melancholy and determination. The playful “do do’s” in the intro and the powerful guitar riffs make it immediately recognizable in the style of Green Day and Weezer. With lyrics about taking new steps in life, the song indicates that the band hasn’t chosen the easiest themes. Bobby’s voice, with its unique mix of rawness and melodic finesse, effortlessly conveys the emotion.
The energetic “Angry Little Bird” is one of the album’s highlights, a song bursting with attitude and strengthened by pointed harmonies. Here, the band shows how well they mesh together: Kelsey’s driving bass, Rarick’s precise drums, and Robbins’ cutting guitar lines form a perfect foundation for Bognar’s fierce vocals.
The album’s dynamics come through well in “Get Out!,” a solid rock track with sing-along choruses and a fiery drive. The repeated cries of “Get out of my head” make it an instant crowd favorite. But Bognar’s Handsome doesn’t limit itself to raw energy alone. “One Step Closer” offers a more intimate moment, where an acoustic melody and subtle arrangements emphasize the emotional depth of Bognar’s songwriting.
“So Long” also contributes to the album’s melancholic undertone, with wistful lyrics that perfectly complement the melodic guitar themes. The balance between energy and introspection makes this album versatile and captivating.
“Kansas City” pulls the band back into rougher territory with a wonderful punk feeling and an unmistakable urgency in both the music and vocals. The roaring guitars and infectious rhythm make it one of the most exciting songs on the record. As the ultimate finale, “Give It Up, Too” serves up one last dose of pure rock energy, where the band lets loose uninhibitedly, and the album ends on a high note.
“…And Then Some” is an impressive debut that is both accessible and authentic. Bobby Bognar and his band are masters at combining catchy hooks with a raw, honest sound. Whether it’s upbeat punk rock or melancholic power pop, each song carries an emotional charge and an unfiltered energy that effortlessly sweeps the listener along. An album that’s a must for fans of catchy, well-written punk rock. (8/10) (Bobby Bognar)
