Friday night saw the streets of Bristol, UK, filled with pirate costumes as fans voyaged towards SWX to see the Good Kid’s show ‘This can’t be the end’. As fans filled the venue dressed in pirate hats, eye patches, and inflatable swords, it was clear that this was going to be a ‘jolly good’ evening.

Kicking off the show was West Sussex band Dutch Criminal Record. The trio Sam Thrussell, Joe Frampton, and Joe Delaney-Stone set sail with their show to a mighty cheer from the crowd and performed a few songs from their recently released album “Novium.” The band came out in pirate gear and brought a laid-back, surfer vibe to their alternative indie style. As they gave the crowd a taste of “Novium”, the crowd cheered with excitement as they announced their return to Bristol, to perform at Thekla.

After Dutch Criminal Record, fans were immersed in the atmosphere as pirate-themed music and sea shanties played in the background, fully engaging everyone in the night’s theme. Around 7:30 P.M., excitement increased through SWX as the crowd speculated about the mystery surprise the band had promised via Instagram. Cheers echoed through when Nick Frosst, lead singer of Good Kid, came out to treat the audience to an acapella set of sea shanties. The crowd joined in with enthusiasm, and it was clear: this performance was a hit—Nick definitely was not walking the plank tonight!

Nick’s Shanties concluded the warm-up and now it was time for what the crowd had been waiting for: running out with a lgbtq+ flag. Much to the support from the fans, the band consisting of lead vocalist Nick Frosst, drummer Jon Kereliuk, bassist Michael Kozakov, and guitarists David Wood and Jacob Tsafatinos entered the stage and began their set. The show was funny, and immersive, and pumped the crowd with catchy tunes that had everyone singing and dancing. The band played such fan favourites as “Witches,” “Atlas,” and “Down with the King.”

Keeping the crowd engaged throughout, they played with inflatable sharks and swords and brought out a fan favourite, “The Wheel of Chaos.” Inviting Two best-dressed fans to the stage to take part. The wheel spun, and it was in fact time for Nick Frosst to walk the plank as the wheel landed on him being kicked off the show. Although to the dismay of fans, the disappointment was not for long as guitarist David Wood treated the crowd to his own performance of First Rate Town.

Following on from the beautiful lyrics and voice of an unwell David, the band rejoined him on stage to finish what had been an utterly thrilling night. Good Kid’s tour finishes in the UK on the 27th with only shows in Nottingham, Glasgow, Manchester, and Leeds left before they kick start their Europe leg in Amsterdam. Good Kid was definitely worth seeing in concert. Their music was catchy, and a few of their songs, such as Summer, definitely made it onto my playlist on the way home.
